Pilgrim Nuclear Plant Workers Face Contract Deadline

Just months after 242 members of UWUA Local 369 were locked out of work at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, 70 additional members of the union now face a looming contract deadline at midnight Wednesday.

Union President Dan Hurley says negotiations are again stuck on the issue of how much workers should pay for health care. But he says he is confident the two sides will be able to reach a deal by the midnight deadline, and that workers will return to the job on Thursday.

Unlike their counterparts this summer, members of UWUA's Technical Unit have not authorized leadership to call a strike.

Other union members were locked out in early June, after contract negotiations failed to reach a deal, and workers gave leadership the go-ahead to call a strike. They did not return to the job for 35 days.

Still, in a statement, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it has inspected Pilgrim's strike contingency plans and found them acceptable.

Pilgrim confirmed that it was in contract talks but would not comment further.
