Menino Hospitalized With Virus

BOSTON — A spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says he has been hospitalized with a virus after a trip to Italy.

Spokeswoman Dot Joyce says Menino got back from an anniversary trip to Italy late Thursday and went to see his doctor because he wasn’t feeling well. His doctor admitted him to the hospital.

Joyce says the mayor is well enough to engage in decisions being made about the approaching superstorm, but he is not well enough to be out and about.

The 69-year-old Menino will remain in the hospital at least through Monday.

The city says all public schools will be closed Monday and all nonessential city employees have been told to stay home. Massachusetts officials have opened the state emergency operations center to prepare for the storm.

Menino has been hospitalized several times in recent years. In 2010, he was hospitalized for several days after he scraped his elbow at a conference in Florence, Italy. He developed septic bursitis and cellultis on the elbow from a bacterial infection. In 2009, Menino tore a tendon near his left knee and had to be on crutches for several weeks.
