Pedro Martinez, one of the most beloved, colorful and successful characters in Boston Red Sox history, is back with the team in a front-office job.

The Red Sox announced Thursday that Martinez is joining the team as a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington. The former pitcher's duties will include evaluating and mentoring younger players.

Martinez spent seven seasons with the Red Sox. In 2004, his final year in Boston, Martinez played a major role as the Sox ended their 86-year World Series title drought.

Last spring, Martinez told ESPN that that was the greatest moment of his career.

"You know what, my ring with Boston, I would not trade for three of them anywhere else," he said. "Not only three, maybe five somewhere else."

Martinez joins his former catcher on the front-office staff. Jason Varitek began working with the team in a similar role last fall.
