Boston Report: City Has Regained All Jobs Lost In Recession

A new report (PDF) finds that Boston is recovering from the recession faster than most other U.S. cities.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority says the city has regained all 15,000 jobs it lost during the recession.

Mark Melnik, who helped write the report, credits that improvement to growth in computer, health care, education and food service industries.

"These are industry types that really attract young college-educated workers, which is something that we have a great abundance of in the city," Melnick said.

Among comparable cities, Melnik said Boston has the highest percentage of 20- to 34-year-olds in the nation, making up more than a third of Boston's population.

And Melnik said he expects growth to continue.

"Our projections show that we will have hit an all-time jobs high in 2012 in Boston, and we're projecting over 728,000 jobs in the city by the year 2016."

Current estimates put the number of jobs in Boston around 680,000.
