Brown Ex-Campaign Official Named Mass. GOP Chair

BOSTON — The deputy campaign finance director for former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has been elected leader of the Massachusetts Republican Party.

Party spokesman Tim Buckley said the state committee vote Thursday for Kirsten Hughes was close. She won the party chair position by only two votes – 41 to 39 – over Pepperell businessman Rick Green.

The 35-year-old Hughes, a lawyer, ran the state Republican Party’s 2010 convention and was a political field director.

Brown lost a re-election bid to Democrat Elizabeth Warren last November, but may seek the Senate vacancy left after John Kerry was confirmed as the nation’s secretary of state.
