BOSTON Republican Sean Bielat has pulled out of the state’s special U.S. Senate election after making an appeal for campaign contributions over the weekend.
Bielat said Wednesday that while he thought he could have mounted a strong campaign, the time isn’t right.
Bielat had filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and sought donations over the weekend.
In his online appeal Bielat said he was launching his campaign to replace John Kerry, who stepped down to become secretary of state.
Bielat said he needed to raise $150,000 by midnight Tuesday to help collect the 10,000 signatures needed to get on the primary ballot. The signature deadline is next Wednesday.
Daniel Winslow and Gabriel Gomez have already announced they are running on the GOP side. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan is weighing a run.
