Longfellow Bridge Repairs Will Close Lanes Heading From Boston To Cambridge

A project to repair the Longfellow Bridge, which carries vehicular traffic and the MBTA's Red Line over the Charles River, is set to begin this summer.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says work will close the bridge to drivers heading from Boston into Cambridge until 2016, while lanes heading into Boston will remain open.

The MBTA says Red Line service will be replaced by buses for 25 weekends over the course of the project.

J.F. White, Skanska Koch and Consigli Construction were jointly awarded the $255.5 million rehabilitation contract, which will include improved bicycle and pedestrian lanes.
