Mass. Housing Officials Seek ‘Sensible’ Reform

BOSTON — Representatives of local public housing authorities are calling for a less dramatic overhaul of their operations than what has been proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick.

The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials plans to meet with legislators at the State House on Monday.

Patrick filed a reform bill in January that would eliminate 240 public housing authorities around Massachusetts and replace them with six regional housing agencies. The governor said in filing the legislation that it would save money while helping rid the public housing system of corruption.

Local officials are supporting a competing bill which they say would streamline and consolidate operations of housing authorities while retaining local governance and oversight. They call it a “common sense reform proposal.”

the state should try running the welfare dept correctly , we have enough gov involvement in our lives ,raise taxes and take over agencies, it took 6 years for him to come up with these 2 ideas , go back to counting black bears

this is exactly what needs to be done. having 240 agencies means 240 sets of useless buerocrats. this same problem is why there are so many problems in education and why places like new jersey spend so much money on “education” and get such poor results
