Mass AG Asking Supreme Court To Throw Out Marriage Law

BOSTON — Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley plans to be at the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday for arguments on the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

The law prohibits same-sex couples in states where gay marriage is legal from receiving an array of federal benefits available to heterosexual married couples. The justices are hearing the case on Wednesday.

Coakley and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed a brief with the high court last month calling for DOMA to be struck down.

Massachusetts in 2009 was the first state to challenge DOMA, saying the law discriminated against the thousands of couples that had married since the state legalized gay marriage.

Coakley and 13 other states also filed a brief seeking an overturn of California’s ban on gay marriage. The Supreme Court heard that case on Tuesday.

Coakley has no business trying to force our laws down the throats of the people of other states. There is a reason why we chose a federal system instead of making the US a single state: It allows competition and limits the damage caused by bad ideas.

She has every right and an absolute responsibility to end discrimination in the whole country. Many States have no idea what is in their own best interest and that is why we have Massachusetts lawmakers. Goof luck to Coakley, whom I do not like otherwise. Let’s end discrimination now.

So, I assume you would be OK with making abortion punishable by death (including for the mother) if there were enough conservative justices on the bench? The Southern Attorney Generals seem to be up for it.

The part I could never understand about Liberals is the assumption that they would be the ones controlling the government and ordering everyone else around. We used to point out to them in the ’60′s that the liberals were the first to get shot when the Communists took over.
