Worcester Bishop Pleads Not Guilty To DUI Charge In R.I.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — The leader of a Roman Catholic diocese in Massachusetts charged with driving drunk in Rhode Island has been released on $1,000 bail.

Worcester Bishop Robert McManus pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

The 61-year-old McManus was represented by former Rhode Island House Speaker William Murphy, who’s now in private practice. He was arrested Saturday night in Narragansett near his vacation home.

In a statement Monday, McManus said he “made a terrible error in judgment” by driving after drinking wine at dinner and asked for forgiveness.

McManus is a Rhode Island native and served as auxiliary bishop in Providence for five years. He’s been Worcester bishop since 2004.

McManus is due back in court May 28.

In one breath he admits it and in the next he pleads not guilty? WWJD, bishop?

Jesus would probably don a pair of sandals and walk home.

How can you ask for forgiveness if you are pleading not guilty?

He is really asking for leniency John. He deserves it. He is an old clergyman, and has been “suffering” all these years together with the poor and “helping” the vulnerable. His only vacation home is in RI, not a spectacular place.

Just a week ago I heard tithe (and for some reason I started to think of medieval times) talk in the church, probably so mr. mcanus can drive drunk around his future vacation home in the French Riviera where drinking wine and driving is no sin.
