Snowstorm Moves Across Southern New England

A winter storm is dumping light and fluffy snow across southern New England, where meteorologists say the weather will develop to heavy snowfall followed by sleet and freezing rain.

The National Weather Service says parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island will see snow accumulation of between 6 inches and a foot. There is also a possibility for a thin sheet ice deposit across parts of Massachusetts.

Light snow began falling by midday Saturday. It will become heavy overnight and continue into early Sunday. The precipitation will change to sleet and freezing rain from south to north early Sunday across most of the interior, with rainfall on the coast.

Authorities caution drivers to travel only when necessary, reduce speeds well below the posted limits and leave additional space between vehicles.
