Mass. Tribe In Final Phase Of Casino Land Bid

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe says it has entered the final stage of its federal land-in-trust request for a proposed casino in Taunton.

Tribal chairman Cedric Cromwell said in a statement on Tuesday that the time period set aside for public input has ended and the tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are now working on a final environmental impact report.

Cromwell said the tribe is working to address concerns raised during the public comment period about potential traffic congestion at the Route 24 and Route 140 interchange in Taunton.

The tribe is hoping for a ruling from the U.S. Interior Department on its land-in-trust bid by the end of the year. A favorable decision is needed for the casino project to proceed.
