4 Lowell Officers Punished After Woman Dies In Custody

Four Lowell police officers have been placed on paid leave for their roles in the death of a 31-year-old woman in custody.

Superintendent William Taylor also announced Thursday that three other officers are being recommended for disciplinary action in the case.

No names were released.

Alyssa Brame died in a department cell in January 2013. Brame died from acute alcohol poisoning about two hours after being arrested on suspicion of prostitution charges.

The Lowell Sun reports that investigations by the department and the Middlesex district attorney's office determined that Brame "was not given the proper medical attention that she was in obvious need of."

Taylor said some officers displayed "deliberate indifference."

The district attorney's office previously determined that criminal charges against the officers were not warranted.
