Mass. State Police Crackdown On Distracted Driving

BOSTON — Massachusetts State Police are launching a crackdown on distracted driving, particularly texting while driving.

Troopers in marked and unmarked vehicles will show zero tolerance for offenders during the stepped up enforcement effort that is scheduled through June 28.

Lt. Stephen Walsh, operational officer of the initiative, says the goal is to educate the public and save lives. He says most drivers won’t comply with the law unless they face real penalties.

In Massachusetts, composing, sending or reading an electronic message while driving is subject to a $100 fine for the first offense. Subsequent violations could result in $500 fines.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in 2012, more than 3,300 people were killed and 421,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers.

Translation: The coffers generated by arbitrary rules like speed limits and equipment malfunctions are getting thin, so we will now step up enforcement on yet another nanny state law and extort more money from the citizens in the name of safety and educating the public.

Yes, speed limits are, many times ridiculous and just a way to extract money from citizens.

BUT texting, sending or reading e-mails or playing games on a smart phone is killing thousands a year, and causing almost a half a million crashes a year.

Take a look at some of the murdered bodies and crashed cars and you that reality just may make you change your mind.

Not to mention the fools at red lights and stops that continue playing with their phone and hold up traffic, not realizing the light turned green.

More people murdered than the 911 attacks in one year alone with people who can’t stop texting or reading e-mails while operating a potentially dangerous piece of machinery.

I am against many forms of enforcement but this is much needed, and not just through June 28th. but all through the year.

PEOPLE: Do not text or read or send e-mails. Almost a half a million crashes a year is proof enough.
