Mass. Schools Weigh Options For Making Up Snow Days

Schools around Massachusetts are reopening after February vacation - some with a lot of catching up to do.

Even before the regularly-scheduled break, a string of severe storms had forced many school districts to use up their annual allotment of snow days.

As students return to classrooms on Monday, some districts may consider asking state education officials for a waiver from the state's requirement of a 180-day school year.

But Gov. Charlie Baker is hoping local officials will find other ways to make up for the lost time. Possibilities could include canceling part or all of April vacation, or adding school days at the end of June.

Boston, with eight snow days so far, has opted to hold school on two Suffolk County holidays: Evacuation Day on March 17, and Bunker Hill Day on June 17.
