Fire Damages Cambridge Elementary School Building

This fall's opening of the Martin Luther King School in Cambridge is likely to be delayed, due to a three-alarm fire that broke out in the building late Saturday afternoon.

The city's assistant fire chief Gerard Mahoney estimates that the school, which is still under construction, has suffered up to $3 million in damage.

"The opening of the school in September may be delayed, but those kids are in other school buildings as we speak, so they'll probably be able to stay there," he said.

No one was hurt in the fire, and inspectors are investigating the cause.
