Nearly two years after James "Whitey" Bulger was convicted on racketeering charges involving the murder of 11 people, a date has been set for his appeal.

Serving two consecutive life sentences at 85 years old, Bulger's appeal will be heard by the First Circuit Court of Appeals on July 27.

Bulger's lawyers claim he did not get a fair trial because they were barred from saying that a now-deceased prosecutor promised Bulger immunity for his crimes, a claim prosecutors have called ludicrous.

A fugitive for 16 years, Bulger now resides in a federal prison in Florida.
