Too Many Records, Too Little Room At Massachusetts Archives

The mountain of paperwork generated by state government has the Massachusetts Archives bursting at the seams.

Officials say the facility at Boston's Columbia Point has run out of space for the state's most important records and historical documents. It hopes to build a new state-of-the-art vault to store the material.

But the domino effect of the $6.2 million proposal would displace countless other records generated by state agencies that are considered to have temporary, but not permanent, value.

Much of that material is to be returned to the agencies or, in some cases, destroyed.

Officials in Gov. Charlie Baker's administration say they're concerned with the potential costs associated with storing the records and are seeking more discussions with Secretary of State William Galvin, whose office oversees the archives.
