State lawmakers are being asked to figure out whether protecting the rights of transgender people could threaten the rights of others.

At issue are two bills to expand legal protections in Massachusetts for transgender people, which backers call a basic civil rights issue. But, opponents say those protections could threaten others' privacy rights.

WBUR's Steve Brown reports on arguments made before a legislative committee on Tuesday.

This segment aired on October 7, 2015.
