Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley is renewing his call for a ban on assault weapons.

The archbishop of Boston issued a statement Tuesday in response to the mass shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people and injured dozens more.

O'Malley expressed concern that the Florida massacre will be used as an "excuse to hate Muslims."

WBUR's All Things Considered host Lisa Mullins spoke with O'Malley by phone. He's in California, attending a bishops' conference, and he says his words come from a growing sense of frustration.

This segment aired on June 14, 2016.
