Often Bedridden For 25 Years, Advocate Welcomes NIH Move On Fatigue Syndrome
The NIH has just announced a new commitment to researching the disease commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome. A Massachusetts writer who has been frequently bedridden for 25 years welcomes the promise but calls on the government to attach a dollar figure to its commitment, and fund research on the disease -- estimated to affect at least 1 million Americans -- at a level comparable to similar diseases like multiple sclerosis.

The federal government has moved on several major changes that are closely reflected in the recommendations: the most recent being this week’s unprecedented policy change at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)that will now require researchers to expand inclusion of female cells and lab animals in NIH-funded medical research at both the clinical and pre-clinical stage.
