Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's announcement that she wants to stay on as head of the Democrats in the new Congress has set off a battle for the number two spot. Current House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Jim Clayburn of South Carolina, the House’s highest-ranking African-American are both rallying their allies in bids to become minority whip. The contest could reflect the direction of Democrats in the new Congress, with Hoyer being more moderate and Clayburn more progressive.
