Holocaust Documentary Tells Of 'Two Who Dared'

A new documentary by Artemis Joukowsky looks at the largely untold story of how his grandparents, an unassuming Unitarian minister and his wife, left their family in Massachusetts to save refugees during the Holocaust.

The couple provided new identities for refugees, escorted them across borders and organized a Kindertransport boat that brought refugee children to the United States from war-torn France.

The documentary is called "Two Who Dared: The Sharps' War."

It includes dozens of interviews with Holocaust survivors who were involved with Martha and Waitstill Sharp, including Alex Strasser, who was six years old when he and his brother boarded the Kindertransport.

The Sharps made these rescues while leaving their own two toddlers at home — a story Joukowsky first heard when he interviewed his grandmother for a ninth grade history project.

"I'm sure it was excruciating. I know it was the greatest regret of my grandmother's life, but I think both my grandparents would have done it again," Joukowsky told Here & Now.
