A Chinese official who was trying to explain a decision to take some control over what was supposed to be the first Democratic election in Hong Kong was interrupted today. Members of the pro-democracy movement in the former British colony stood on chairs and pumped their fists and waved banners that read "Shameful."

The election is set for 2017 and was supposed to be a chance for Hong Kong to elect its own leader, but Beijing said over the weekend that it would have a say in selecting the candidates.

Journalist Francis Moriarty joins Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson from Hong Kong to discuss the significance of these developments. Moriarty is also chairman of the Press Freedom Committee of the Foreign Correspondents Club in Hong Kong.
