Earlier this week, a 6-year-old boy named Daniel Ramirez passed away in Washington state from a mysterious ailment that is suspected to be a rare neurological syndrome — acute flaccid myelitis.

The syndrome has now potentially affected nine children in the area, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the cases.

Here & Now's Robin Young talks to Dr. Catherine Otten, a pediatric neurologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, about what is known and what is not.

This segment aired on November 3, 2016.
