Fresh Air Fund Gives Thousands Of Kids Access To Camp And The Outdoors

The Fresh Air Fund was founded in 1877 as a way for inner-city kids to head out to the country for an outdoor summer experience. Today, the not for profit sends kids each summer to 13 states and Canada, and provides other services like college counseling year-round.

Fatima Shama (@FatimaShamaNYC) grew up in a poor neighborhood in New York. She took over as the Fresh Air Fund's executive director in 2015, and since then has worked to serve children in the program. Shama spoke with Here & Now's Robin Young last summer.
