It’s not a pretty picture at Instagram — and other social media sites — where the Federal Trade Commission says celebrity marketers are failing to disclose that their posts about various products are actually paid advertisements. The FTC recently sent warnings to 90 marketers and celebrities reminding them of their legal obligation to disclose marketing relationships.

A recent study looked at 50 of the top celebrities on Instagram and found that only seven percent were in compliance with FTC guidelines.

Here & Now media analyst John Carroll (@johncarroll_bu) talks to Here & Now's Lisa Mullins about the FTC’s latest efforts to create transparency.

This segment aired on July 5, 2017.
