The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting black Americans especially hard. In Richmond, Virginia, for example, three-quarters of the people who have died from the disease are black.

But racial health disparities there are nothing new. The 1918 flu pandemic also took its toll on the city's black population, who were left to fend for themselves. Ben Paviour from member station VPM has more from Richmond.
