Former Rep. Garry Studds Dies

An official at Boston Medical Center says former Massachusetts Congressman Gerry Studds has died.

He was 69.

Studds' husband says Studds was admitted to the hospital several days ago after collapsing while on a walk, suffering from what was later determined to be a blood clot in his lung.

His condition worsened on Friday and he died early this morning.

Studds was first elected to the House in 1972, representing the South Shore, Cape Cod and the Islands for 12 consecutive terms. He retired in 1997.

Studds was back in the news this week following the eruption of the Mark Foley page scandal.

He was censured by the House in 1983 for having had an affair a decade earlier with a teenage male page.

This program aired on October 14, 2006. The audio for this program is not available.
