Academy Homes' 'Dark Side'

The shooting of three boys at the Academy Homes complex in Roxbury last weekend has some civic leaders seeking a second "Boston Miracle."

They're asking police, religious leaders, and city government to come up with a comprehensive strategy to keep kids out of trouble, as they did a decade ago.

We visited Academy Homes Thursday. There, we met a woman who tries to keep her kids inside and safe. Tanika Howard has lived in the apartment complex for more than 20 years and is raising her three children there now. We hear from her in this report.

We also met youth-workers, who showed us around the complex. WBUR's Deb Becker starts our story today with one of them, Kevin Peterson. He's Executive Director of the Ella J. Baker House, a community organization.

This program aired on October 24, 2008. The audio for this program is not available.
