Former All-Stars Roger Clemens, Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez and radio announcer Joe Castiglione will be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame this year, the organization announced Wednesday.
The hard-throwing Clemens pitched for the Red Sox from 1984 to 1996, winning Cy Young awards in 1986, 1987 and 1991. He played out the rest of his career away from Boston, winning three more Cy Young awards — and two World Series trophies — with the rival New York Yankees. His seventh Cy Young award, a MLB record, came in 2004 with the Houston Astros.
Despite his 354 career wins, Clemens fell short of the necessary votes for induction into the Baseball Hall in 2013 and 2014, amid swirling allegations of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Before a House committee in 2008, Clemens denied those allegations. He was later charged with lying to Congress but was found not guilty in 2012.
Like Clemens, Garciaparra also launched his career in Boston. Batting .306, the shortstop won the Rookie of the Year award in 1997. He went on to represent the Red Sox in five All Star games before being traded to Chicago Cubs in 2004.
Martinez joined the Red Sox in 1998 and spent seven seasons pitching for Boston, including the 2004 season in which the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. The fastballer won three Cy Young awards before retiring in 2009. He will become eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
Castiglione, a radio broadcaster, has been calling Red Sox games for 31 seasons, more than any announcer other than Ned Martin.
Garciaparra was the lone position player selected from a group of 15 nominees. Clemens and Martinez beat out 11 other pitchers for entry into the hall, which was founded in 1995.
The three former players and the broadcaster will be inducted at a dinner in August.
Former players and managers who spent at least three seasons with the Red Sox, and are at least three years removed from their careers, are eligible for nomination. A 16-person committee selects the hall of fame members.
