A Cambridge man appeared in federal court Tuesday on charges of heroin trafficking and possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number.
The weapon 21-year-old Stephen Silva is accused of possessing is the same type of weapon authorities have said was used to kill MIT Police Officer Sean Collier during the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
Collier's slaying is not mentioned in the grand jury indictment against Silva, and a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office would not confirm or deny that the weapon is connected to the case.
The Associated Press reports that Silva is a friend of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:
[Silva] said in court Tuesday that he graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 2011, the same year as Tsarnaev. Silva was ordered to remain in custody ahead of a bail hearing scheduled for Aug. 6.
