The Massachusetts Senate has a new leader, but it's a temporary one.

Senate President Stan Rosenberg has taken leave from the position while he's the subject of an investigation from the Senate Ethics Committee. The investigation focuses on whether there's any truth to reports where his husband claimed he could influence Senate business.

Senators elected Harriette Chandler of Worcester to become the acting Senate president on Monday night.

Her election came only after hours of private meetings, first among Senate Democrats, and then among all senators. To explain it all, WBUR State House reporter Steve Brown joined Morning Edition.

This segment aired on December 5, 2017.
