Boston Mayor Marty Walsh will hit the campaign trail Thursday, but he won't be trying to get a head start on a 2022 statewide race.

Walsh is heading to Ohio and Indiana — two states Republican Donald Trump won by nearly 10 points in 2016 — over the next two days to stump for Democrats running for governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer and Congress from each state, his campaign announced.

"I care too deeply about the future of our country to sit on the sidelines," the mayor and former labor leader said in a statement. Walsh has stepped into national Democratic politics before, including speaking at the 2016 Democratic convention.

Thursday in Ohio, Walsh will participate in a roundtable hosted by the Central Ohio Labor Council and then attend a canvass kickoff for congressional candidate Danny O’Connor. The mayor will also speak at a labor rally to support O'Connor, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, Betty Sutton, and congressional candidate Ken Harbaugh.

On Friday, Walsh joins congressional candidate Aftab Pureval and candidate for treasurer Rob Richardson for a press conference on infrastructure in front of one of the most structurally deficient bridges in Ohio, according to Walsh's campaign.

Friday afternoon will find Walsh in Indiana, where he will be the subject of a Facebook live interview with John Zody, the chairman of the Indiana State Democratic Party. He will also take part in an event hosted by the think tank New America.

Walsh's campaign said the mayor will lead "an intimate conversation on how deeply stratified but innovative cities can help workers find pathways to financial and social stability, for their own good and the good of the local and national economy."
