Although a collaboration featuring Sean Watkins of the contemporary acoustic band Nickel Creek and Jon Foreman of the alt-rock group Switchfoot may not seem intuitive, the two joined forces to form Fiction Family after being told repeatedly by friends to write songs together. Written and recorded between the tours of their respective bands, Fiction Family's self-titled debut features acoustic pop songs written or co-written by both men.
The group's upbeat melodies, vocal harmonies and cinematic arrangements all recall '60s pop music, but with a bit of a folk twist. Joining Fiction Family are Aaron Redfield on drums, Tyler Chester on bass and Watkins' sister Sara, also an original member of Nickel Creek, on fiddle and backing vocals. Pianist Bob Thompson and the Mountain Stage band close out the set with an instrumental take on the folk standard "St. James Infirmary."
This feature first ran Apr. 15, 2009.
