AUDIE CORNISH, host: At roughly this time 10 years ago the South Tower of the World Trade Center had been burning for just under an hour. Hundreds of people were still trapped in the building. Thousands of New Yorkers had turned out on nearby city streets to watch the event unfold, some armed with video cameras. And they recorded disturbing images of the moment the first of the twin towers collapsed.

CORNISH: We'll soon be going live to a moment of silence and remembrance at ground zero in honor of that moment. That will be marking 9:59, the moment when the South Tower imploded into a cloud of debris and dust that rolled throughout the surrounding neighborhood. I'm Audie Cornish and you're listening to live special coverage of the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks from NPR News. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright National Public Radio.
