Winnipeg Jet Thrashing Transformers

Yesterday, it became apparent that the NHL team moving from Atlanta to Winnipeg will be known as the Jets when they get there.

The NHL team that played in Winnipeg from 1979 until 1996 was also known as the Jets.

In Atlanta, the team was the Thrashers. Now, in Winnipeg, they'll revive the name "Jets."

Hooray, say fans of history and tradition, but that was not the consensus evident yesterday afternoon in the Only A Game office.

"They blew a great opportunity," said Doug Tribou. "They could have been the Thrasher Jets."

"That would have been cool," I said. "Or they could have been the Jet Thrashers."

"You mean, Jet Thrashers, like thrashing the jets as they fly by, like the Transformers?" Gary asked.

"Yeah," I said. "Jet Thrashers."

"Or Jet Thrashing Transformers," Doug suggested thoughtfully.

Perhaps in another office that might have been the end of the conversation, because where do you go after the Jet Thrashing Transformers?

But then somebody remembered the story we'd run when Memphis got their NBA team, and we found these guys at a bus stop in Memphis who were talking about what the team should be called.

One of them said, "How about the Dawgs?"
The other one said, "Yeah, or the Crazed Dawgs."
"Yeah," the first guy nodded. "The Memphis Crazed Dogs," and so that's what Memphis has always been to us, and the team entering Winnipeg will be the Jet Thrashing Transformers.

And now you know why Only A Game is just an excellent place to work.
