For Emily Dickinson Superfans Only

We dug deep into Emily Dickinson’s poetry with top critic Helen Vendler (listen here). Vendler, who has a new book out about Dickinson's poetry, joined us in the studio to read and dissect some of the poems.

Later in the hour, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and friend of the show Rae Armantrout shared two of her favorite Dickinson poems with us. A lot of callers chimed in with their favorite poems too. A few read them on air, some reciting the lines by heart. (Don't miss On Point's great archive show about reciting verse from memory.)

We geeked out a bit when researching this show and found a lot of other Dickinson devotees who have been inspired to create their own art. If you're a Dickinson superfan, don't miss:

  • Billy Collins famously narrated an imagined encounter with Dickinson.
  • There’s a Dickinson-themed garden in New York City.
  • A cool web comic channels Dickinson’s wit and irreverence (credit: On Point commenter Susan Hall.)
  • And here’s one of our favorite musical tributes to the “Belle of Amherst":
