Where Did Nickel Creek Go?

If you, like so many of our regular listeners out there, were eagerly perched beside your car stereo / retrofited jukebox / digital listening device this morning hoping to hear progressive folk trio Nickel Creek in all their reunited glory, you were probably pretty disappointed when the audio that streamed out of your respective public radio machine turned about to be about plant science.

"Is this an error?" some of you asked us on Twitter.

"What are you doing? Is this a warm-up act?" others wondered.

"WHERE IS NICKEL CREEK?!?!" nobody wrote but everybody wondered, we'd like to imagine.

Sadly, this was none of these things. When a guest joins us from a remote location (i.e., not right in front of the host), we use the magic of telecommunications to pipe them in from another studio elsewhere in the world so it sounds like they really have joined us in our studio. That was the plan today for our guests, the three members of Nickel Creek, who would be joining us from a studio in Manhattan.

Unfortunately, the network we use to connect studios suffered some prohibitive barriers to access today, and we weren't able to get through studio to studio. It's neither studio's fault — the network we use wouldn't let us make the studio connection. Even worse, Chris Thille, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins were all tuned up in the studio and waiting for the show to go live.

After we determined this issue, we played a backup emergency archived show in order to prevent dead air on our partner stations nationwide.

We're hoping to invite Nickel Creek back on later this year — stay tuned for the rescheduled date when we figure it out! — and we hope everybody who gets to see them on tour enjoys the music!
