What Not To Say To The Parents Of Preemies
Resume“He’s so small!”
“He’s how old? My child is the same age and twice his size.”
Believe it or not - these are things the parents of premature babies report hearing from friends and family when they see their infants for the first time.
About 500,000 babies a year in United States are born prematurely, and judging from a new report, “Insensitive Comments And Their Impact On Preemie Mothers," many people don't know quite what to say in this situation.
Carey Goldberg, the cohost of WBUR.org's CommonHealth blog, wrote about the survey in a her post, "10 Things Not To Say To Parents Of Preemies" and she has personal experience as the mother of a premature child.
Guests:
- Carey Goldberg, cohost of WBUR.org's CommonHealth blog
