District Attorneys Begin Sorting Through Cases Possibly Mishandled At State Crime Lab

The state's 11 district attorneys met with Massachusetts officials Wednesday, addressing the next steps for dealing with potentially mishandled cases coming out of the now-closed state crime lab in Jamaica Plain.

Michael O'Keefe, district attorney for the Cape and Islands, contends that he and his colleagues need more information on where the investigation is headed in order to ensure that justice is upheld.

The lab was ordered shut last month after reports that one of its employees failed to follow drug testing protocals between 2003 and 2011.  Approximately 34,000 cases are in question, raising concerns about state procedures for testing drug evidence.

Ed Ryan is a defense attorney and former president of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He suggests that a third party — other than law enforcement — be involved in the investigation.
