Jazz composer and bassist Mike Pope has played with numerous big-name bands and musicians, from the great Dave Brubeck to Manhattan Transfer to Blood, Sweat and Tears to Chick Corea.

He frequently plays with "the House of Cardinals," which includes the young Russian-born pianist Eldar Djangirov.

We recorded Pope and Djangirov in a small performance room across the street from our studios, and we talked to Pope about jazz, improvisation and the intersection of jazz and classical music, which is very much a theme of his new album. Called "Cold Truth Warm Heart," it was inspired by a frightening mid-life experience.

Mike Pope will be performing at the Regattabar in Cambridge Tuesday night with what's billed as "A Superband: Mike Pope & the House of Cardinals."
