Imagine getting a terse email from your estranged father with the subject line: "Changes."

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Susan Faludi got exactly that email. Her father was announcing that he had undergone surgery in Thailand. He was now a she, going by the name Stefi.

At 76 years old, he wrote to his daughter: "I have decided that I have had enough of impersonating a macho, aggressive man that I have never been inside."

Then, Stefi challenged her daughter to tell her story.
