Sports journalism is about more than just what happens on the field, whether it's shining a light on important stories (like the continuing investigation of Aaron Hernandez's arrest and death) or bringing the human side of players to the public.

That's why the closure of the New York Times' local sports desk has journalists wondering what's next for the industry.

Radio Boston spoke with Shalise Manza Young, columnist for Yahoo Sports, and A. Sherrod Blakely of Boston University's School of Communications about the past, present and future of sports media and why it matters to everyone.

This segment aired on July 20, 2023.
