The Theater Offensive was founded in Boston 35 years ago, when HIV-AIDS was upending America. It has been on the vanguard of art and theater for the LGBTQ community ever since.

This month, they named Giselle Byrd as their executive director, claiming her as the first Black trans woman to lead a regional theater in the country. They also plan to open their first black box theater space this fall in Boston's Fenway neighborhood.

We speak with Byrd about the role and her vision for the theater company. Then, we're joined by WBUR's Candice Springer for a preview of some fun things to do this weekend.

This segment aired on January 18, 2024.
