More than 7,000 students in Massachusetts attend private special education schools each year. Many struggle with autism, learning disabilities or behavioral issues.

Under federal law, if public schools can't meet the needs of a child, the district must pay to send students to special education schools. These private institutions can be expensive, with tuition ranging from from $60,000 to $500,000, depending on the program.

A WBUR investigation has uncovered potential conflicts of interest, and widespread failure of state oversight, in these programs. Radio Boston speaks with senior investigative reporter Patrick Madden about his reporting.

This segment aired on May 7, 2024.
