Rapid Senate Campaign Heats Up Airwaves, Web
BOSTON — With less than three months until the special primary election for U.S. Senate, the candidates are turning to new approaches to get out their messages.
With the combination of paid media, heightened news coverage and social media — sites such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook — the candidates have more opportunities to reach out to voters.
“All of that is adding up to something that’s more than the usual critical mass you get this early on,” said WBUR Senior Media Analyst John Carroll, adding that it would be difficult to do so using only paid media advertisements.
Carroll said City Year co-founder Alan Khazei has the leading edge as far as tapping social media, in part because of his service organization Be The Change, Inc., which has “given him a foundation from which to build on.”
Rep. Michael Capuano has done a good job with his television ads, Carroll said, because he needs more name recognition. In Capuano’s ads, he emphasizes that he is the heir to the Kennedy legacy.
“Only one candidate stood with Ted Kennedy against Bush’s Iraq war and mirrors his progressive record,” an announcer in one of Capuano’s ads said. It then lists several issues that are important to Capuano, including a public option for health care, middle-class tax cuts, gay marriage rights and ethics reform.
Carroll said that ad is an effective tool for reaching out to voters.
“He also goes to specific issues that are important to traditional Democrats and that’s whose going to turn out in a primary,” Carroll said.
Venture capitalist and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has bombarded television with his ads, but Carroll said they are not particularly effective.
“I’m running for Senate to bring my 25 years of business experience to Washington so that we can turn this nation around,” Pagliuca says in the ad.
One stark difference is that Pagliuca doesn’t have as much energy.
“It sort of lulls you into not paying all that much attention to the ad,” Carroll said.
Carroll said there are two main problems the multi-millionaire needs to confront in the race: name recognition and his reason for being in the race.
“You can go out and buy name recognition, but you can’t buy legitimacy,” Carroll said.
So far, Attorney General Martha Coakley has not had any television advertising presence. Carroll said that is not all that surprising because she has been focused on fundraising and establishing her foundation and she already has the most statewide name recognition out of all the candidates.
Coakley easily leads the pack in fundraising, with $2 million raised since she entered the race in September, her campaign said.
Republican contender state Sen. Scott Brown also has been missing from the television screen, but he has posted a video on YouTube urging people to get involved in his campaign.
“I want to also welcome you to the ‘Brown Briggade,’” Brown says in the video. “So get out there, get active, and get involved.”
Carroll said the use of the term “Brown Briggade” may not be a savory image for a Senate campaign, but the video says a lot more about Brown’s bid.
“What the YouTube video indicates is that is going to be a little bit of an ad hoc, scrambling kind of a campaign,” Carroll said. “His campaign people say he’s too busy out there collecting signatures and fundraising to be thinking about paid media right now.”
One good way to tell how candidates are doing as far as getting their message out is Twitter. Carroll said every candidate has an account.
Coakley (@MarthaCoakley) has the most Twitter followers, with 590. Brown (@ScottBrownMA) comes in second, with about 520, which Carroll believes is boosted in large part because his daughter Ayla was once contestant on Season 5 of “American Idol.”
Khazei (@AlanKhazei) has about 430 Twitter followers; Pagliuca (@stevepagliuca), 190; and Capuano (@mikecapuano), 170.
“I’m not sure it’s the best yardstick, but it’s one where at least you’re comparing apples to apples,” Carroll said.

I have not yet made my mind on who would be the best candidate but I know for sure who is the worst one. Ms. Coakley and her office do not care about little people, and I know it from a more than a year experience of trying to get a little help from the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General. My property company faked a copy of my check and cashed it up. Police said to me it does not investigate companies, but when I tried to get help from madam Coakley, basically I was told to shut up. Massachusetts does not need a senator who cares only about her own political agenda but does not do the work which she supposed to do, which is defending people’s rights.
Ms. Coakley is running on plumbing, not a record. As a prosecuter she over-charged a young foreigner leading to an unnecessary trial with all it’s attendant publicity. The judge finally told her that regardless of the verdict he would enter a finding of manslaughter. It caused unnecessary expense, additional heartache for the family and made the perpetrator out as the victim-pretty much the opposite of the OJ fiasco. Oh and it got Ms. Coakley elected as the AG.Since then please point to one thing the Ms. Coakley has accomplished. The wind turbine settlement? Her candidacy is a joke supported only by unthinking extremists and those easilly led astray. Sen. Brown can only hope Ms. coakley is the finalist

So far Capuano has the best ads on-line.
Brown needs to get some serious help with his media.
the graphics are poor to say the least and the audio on one of them almost ripped my ears off at the end as I was wearing phones. can anyone say audio production? To be putting out such lo-grade material like this will not help him at all. It degrades his efforts and makes it look like he does not care. This is free advertising. the least he could do is get some professional people to do it.
I’m a dem so it helps me. And who cares about american idol in a senate race I hope the people are not basing it on his daughter!
October 09, 2008 – For immediate release:
Attorney General Martha Coakley Reaches Settlement with Defective Wind Turbine Company
FALL RIVER – Today, Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office obtained a consent judgment against Mark Howland, of East Freetown and his company WindTech-Co, resolving allegations that he violated the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act by misleading consumers, many in Southeastern Massachusetts, by making false and misleading representations in promoting the sale of wind turbines, failing to install turbines paid for by consumers and providing unsafe wind turbine installations. Under today’s agreement, which was filed in Fall River Superior Court, Howland will have one year to repay $488,000 in restitution. If he fails to make that payment within one year Howland will be responsible for a payment of $638,000.
“Now more than ever, it is crucial that consumers seek out clean and sustainable alternative energy sources,” said Attorney General Coakley. “This settlement will help ensure that consumers need not fear for their safety or that they are being taken advantage of as a result of contributing to environmentally-sound solutions.”
In March 2007, the Attorney General’s Office filed a complaint and obtained an emergency court order in Bristol Superior Court to shut down Howland’s Freetown company and to place a freeze on his bank accounts. The Attorney General’s Office identified over 160 consumers affected by the faulty wind turbines.
The complaint alleged that Howland misrepresented the power generation capabilities of the turbine systems, and did not disclose to consumers that certain local permitting was necessary for the installation of the turbines. In many instances, local building inspectors notified consumers that construction of the turbines would need to be halted and that systems already installed violated zoning laws. The complaint further alleged that of the systems that Howland and WindTech-Co. installed, most if not all were installed in an unsafe and ineffective manner. Specifically, most installations did not meet the specifications of the turbines’ manufacturer, which posed a safety threat and also failed to generate the intended energy capacity.
Additionally, the complaint alleges that Howland made false representations to consumers in order to sell wind turbine systems. Specifically, Howland misrepresented to consumers that the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) would reimburse consumers for a large portion of the purchase of the turbine systems. The MTC is a quasi-state agency which runs a renewable energy grant program that encourages private homeowners to install wind or solar systems to power their homes or businesses. The program partially reimburses homeowners for the installation of these systems upon completion. Howland misrepresented that the reimbursement was automatic. The MTC sets a cap on the amount of pending projects by a single contractor that may seek reimbursement, and WindTech-Co. surpassed that cap, leaving some consumers disqualified from the reimbursement program. MTC referred the matter to the Attorney General in January 2007 after receiving numerous complaints from Howland’s consumers.
Under today’s agreement, Howland is permanently prohibited from operating a business involved in the sale and installation of alternative energy systems, specifically, wind turbine and hybrid wind turbine/photo-voltaic systems.
This matter was handled by Assistant Attorneys General Margret Cooke and David Monahan of Attorney General Coakley’s Consumer Protection Division. Quinton Dale, Director of Attorney General Coakley’s Investigations Division and the staff of the Investigations Division also assisted in this case.

We need to look at Attorney General Martha Coakley and the agreement she made that is due in full on Oct 9,2009 .
Here’s the deal : Former State Rep Mark Howland from Bristol County started a wind turbine business a few years ago . Mark ended up with a million dollars in customers money in his account and the few wind turbines that were installed fell over and are still falling today. The Attorney general Martha Coakley cut a deal with Mark to pay all the people back by Oct 9,2009 . The the agreement went a little off last year when less than thirty days after trhe agreement Marks house burnt to the ground -opps then Mark had to move to his vacation home in Hawaii – poor Mark .
Its not known if Mark ever paid back the money and do you think this was some kind of sweetheart deal ?
