BOSTON — A victory parade for the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins will be held on Saturday.

Team officials and Mayor Thomas Menino said the rolling rally carrying the players on duck boats will begin at TD Garden at 11 a.m. Menino said details such as the exact route will be announced later Thursday but that the parade will end at Copley Square.

He said Saturday was chosen over Friday to accommodate some players who had schedule conflicts.

“More important to me is we have a good event to honor the Bruins,” Menino said.

Some Bruins fans already got to glimpse, and even touch, the Stanley Cup. About 500 were on hand when the team bus from Boston’s Logan Airport pulled up to the statue of Bobby Orr outside TD Garden Thursday. At first, Bruins players filed off the bus carrying bags. But then team captain Zdeno Chara disembarked carrying the silver cup.

Even after the crowds cleared out, a steady stream of bleary-eyed fans made their way to the statue to beam for camera snapshots. Tom Collins of Quincy lingered, clutching a replica of the Stanley Cup that he made from a colander, a cardboard box from a hot water heater and aluminum foil.

“It’s sort of surreal,” Collins said. “Watching the news this morning, I started crying. It sunk in. We’re the Stanley Cup champions. It’s amazing.”

By playing aggressive, physical hockey, the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Wednesday night to win the Stanley Cup in Game 7 at Vancouver.

“I call them the lunch bucket brigade,” Menino said. “There’s no superstars here, they just go out and do their job every day and they did their job well.”

For Bruins fans waiting nearly four decades for a Cup win, the parade is highly anticipated.

“I’m just really thrilled about the way we performed, especially going into Vancouver in Game 7, to come through with a big game just shows how much character this team has,” said fan Joel MacCaulife, who was at the Garden as the Bruins returned.

“From day one they had a goal and they came out and completed that goal this year, so I couldn’t be more thrilled as a fan.”
