How do police try to ensure that a crowd removal operation goes smoothly?

That question loomed as Occupy Boston protesters faced a midnight deadline Thursday to vacate their encampment at Dewey Square, and as Boston Police handed out pamphlets warning demonstrators that they could be arrested if they refuse to leave.

To review best practices for police when breaking up a protest, WBUR's All Things Considered host Sacha Pfeiffer spoke with Lou Reiter, former deputy chief of police for the Los Angeles Police Department and now a police training consultant for the Public Agency Training Council, the largest law enforcement training company in the country.

Among his observations: the attitude of police officers is a significant factor in whether crowd control operations are successful or not.

This program aired on December 8, 2011.
