Tisei Concedes 6th District Race To Tierney

Republican Richard Tisei on Wednesday conceded defeat in his hard-fought U.S. House race against Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. John Tierney.

Tierney beat Tisei by about 3,600 votes Tuesday, 48.3 to 47.3 percent. Late Tuesday, Tisei's campaign initially said it may challenge the results, alleging voting "irregularities" on the North Shore.

On Wednesday afternoon, there was a back and forth between the campaigns about whether or not Tisei had conceded. Around 2 p.m., the Tisei campaign released an official statement.

"This has been a long, hard-fought battle and I believe that the voters deserve better representation in Washington. That's why I ran. Nonetheless, the election results are now fully in and Congressman Tierney retains a narrow lead," Tisei said in the statement. "I congratulate him on his victory."

Tierney, an eight-term Democrat from Salem, survived despite his struggles to contain the fallout from a federal criminal case involving his wife and her two brothers. The brothers have been implicated in an illegal offshore gambling ring.

He said it was one of the ugliest races in the country.

"Certainly the personal viciousness on that was very, very difficult and the amount of money that came in made it difficult," Tierney said.
